South Florida Burn/Fire Injury Resources

Yearly there are more than 450,000 Americans that are burned so badly that they require medical treatment. Thousands of burn victims succumb to their wounds each year as well. If you have suffered from serious burns due to the negligence of a business or property owner, one of the steps in your recovery process should be contacting an attorney. The lawyers at Elstein Legal are experienced in handling numerous personal injury cases. They can tell you if you are eligible to file a claim so you can receive compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and mental trauma.

Types of Burn Injuries

Depending on how you were burned, there are different degrees of severity to a burn – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree. The most common types of burns are electrical, chemical, scalding, and thermal burns. Some burns can be cared for at home, but if the burn is severe, deep, large, or covers large portions of your feet, hands, face, buttocks, groin, or a major joint, you should seek medical attention.

1st Degree

This type of burn affects only the first layer of the skin, the outer epidermis.  Burns in this category will often resemble a serious and painful sunburn. While painful, they rarely require medical attention, and will frequently heal in about a week.

2nd Degree

Second-degree burns damage both the epidermis and the dermis, and will look pink or bright red. Burns that have progressed to second-degree may also begin to produce blisters, and may take several weeks to fully heal.

3rd Degree

The most serious of the standard burn grades, third-degree burns damage all layers of the skin tissue, often destroying the epidermis, severely damaging the dermis, and even reaching the hypodermis. Burns this serious may also begin to damage muscle tissue and bone. Third-degree burns may take several months, multiple painful graft surgeries, and physical therapy in order to fully heal, and permanent nerve damage, loss of range of movement, and scarring may be unavoidable.
